Chapter 32

DARIUS STOOD BY THE open side door of the Blackhawk as the helicopter hovered twenty meters above the chaotic scene down below. They never tell me anything now, he thought. I’m like an attack dog strapped to a leash, and they only let me go whenever they need me to kill something.

He’d been once again assigned as backup to Lieutenant Breckenridge’s SEAL troop. Along with Flynn, who was serving as his unofficial handler, they’d been flown into the heart of Los Angeles in the middle of the night, and the exact circumstances as to why had not been explained to him.

Peering out over the side, his enhanced senses picked up gunfire as the various SEAL operators continued to engage with what looked to be small groups of opponents in civilian clothing. Are these gangbangers they’re taking on? Darius wondered. Shouldn’t this be something the police ought to be doing?

He felt a light slap on his shoulder. Flynn had gotten up and now stood beside him. “How’re you feeling, Clayton?” the CIA operative asked.

Darius shook his head. “Confused.”

“Oh yeah? Why is that?”

“Because I don’t know what I’m doing here.”

“You’re here to back up the SEALs, Clayton,” he said. “Don’t you remember what General Susskind told us?”

“He didn’t tell us much,” Darius said. “I don’t even know who we’re up against.”

“Enemies of America, that’s what.”

“How do you know? They look like ordinary civilians to me.”

“Ordinary citizens don’t fight back against the authorities.”

“But aren’t we the ones attacking them?”

Flynn leaned his head to the side as he heard something from the headset he wore. After a few more minutes, he made eye contact with Darius. “Okay, get ready.”

“Get ready for what?”

The CIA operative pointed towards what appeared to be a market square down below. “The SEALs are encountering some heavy Neonite resistance in that area. One of those enhanced things is loose. You need to locate and take it down.”

“How would I know what it looks like?”

Flynn smiled as he signaled the chopper pilot to get closer. “Oh, you will. It’ll look kinda like the one you fought against the last time.”

Darius took off the radio headset before gripping the sides of the open doorway. The Blackhawk descended into an adjacent parking lot that was mostly empty, hovering a mere five meters from the ground.

“Go, go, go!” Flynn ordered.

Darius frowned as he leapt out. Once his boots touched the ground, he turned to his right, spotting several teams of SEALs behind cover as they continued to fire into the cluster of buildings across the street.

Breckinridge was there, staying behind a low wall as he gestured frantically towards him. “What are you waiting for? Get in there and clean ‘em out!”

A part of him didn’t want to do it, but he remembered the promise he’d made. Susskind had allowed him to get in touch with his parents, who happened to be residing in the government sector near Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana. His mother had been overjoyed when she found out he was still alive, yet he never told them about his transformation.
